Restoring Healthy Smiles with Gentle, Personalized Care
Even with great brushing habits and regular dental visits, cavities can sometimes happen! The good news is that when tooth decay is caught early, treatment is often simpler, and in some cases, we may be able to manage it with preventive or minimally invasive care without the need for a filling.
At our office, we believe in protecting your child’s natural teeth whenever possible while making every dental experience as comfortable and positive as we can.
When a cavity does need treatment, our goal is to address it before it becomes a bigger problem. Smaller cavities can often be repaired with a filling, while teeth with more extensive decay may benefit from a dental crown to restore their strength and function.
Every child’s smile is unique, and so are their dental needs! Our doctors carefully evaluate each tooth and recommend treatment options that are best suited for your child’s age, dental development, and overall oral health.
Our goal is simple: to relieve discomfort, protect growing smiles, and help prevent future dental problems, all while providing the gentle, compassionate care your family deserves.
Why Treat Cavities in Baby Teeth?
Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth, help children chew and speak, and some stay in place until age 10 to 12. An untreated cavity can cause pain and infection and can affect the permanent tooth underneath.
Treatment Options
Tooth-Colored Fillings
We use composite resin fillings that match the natural tooth color whenever they’re the right choice for the tooth.
Stainless Steel Crowns
Stainless steel crowns are durable, full-coverage restorations often used for baby molars with extensive decay or after certain pulp treatments. They are generally placed in one visit and are lost naturally when the baby tooth falls out.
Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia crowns are recommended for the restoration of front teeth with extensive decay, sometimes warranting pulp therapy. These crowns require specific home care.
Pulpotomy: Helping Save Little Teeth
Sometimes even baby teeth need a little extra TLC! When a cavity becomes deep enough to reach the soft inner tissue of a tooth, called the pulp, a little extra care may be needed to help save that tooth.
A pulpotomy, sometimes called a “baby tooth nerve treatment,” is a procedure designed to preserve a baby tooth when decay has reached the pulp but the remaining tissue in the roots is still healthy enough to maintain.
During this treatment, our doctor gently removes the affected pulp tissue from the crown (top portion) of the tooth while preserving the healthy tissue within the roots. A protective dental crown is then placed to restore the tooth’s strength and function.
Why is saving a baby tooth so important? Baby teeth do much more than create adorable smiles! They help children chew comfortably, speak clearly, and hold the proper space for their developing permanent teeth.
If a tooth is too damaged to save, or the pulp is no longer healthy enough for a pulpotomy, other treatment options may be necessary, including an extraction and possibly a space maintainer to help guide the permanent teeth into their proper positions.
Our goal is always to protect your child’s oral health, relieve discomfort, and preserve their natural smile whenever possible. We’ll carefully explain our recommendations and help you feel confident about the best treatment choice for your child.
Keeping Your Child Comfortable
We use appropriate local anesthesia and comfort techniques to help minimize pain and discomfort during treatment, and we explain care in an age-appropriate way. For anxious children or more extensive treatment plans, we may recommend IV sedation. Learn about our sedation options.
